Reset Urban Design recently won an international tender to prepare a new town plan for the Avarua Township in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Over the last couple of months our team, including Romani Koata and Stantec, have been undertaking initial analysis of the existing township and preparing a Findings Report and three preliminary design options. As part of this process Garth recently spent a week in Rarotonga presenting at over 19 meetings including 2 public presentations.
The key outcomes of the first ever Town Plan for the main township in the Cook Islands are to: incorporate provisions for multi-modal transportation connections between the three key sites and the surrounding communities; provide for the integration and linkages of new public facilities into the fabric of central Avarua whilst enhancing the area’s character, movement opportunities and public enjoyment; develop a strong public ream and a resilient transport system; and create an open space network and streetscape to stitch the central area of Avarua together.
