Design with Nature 50 years later

In 1969, Professor Ian  McHarg of the University of Pennsylvania changed the course of landscape architecture with the publication of Design With Nature. Last month the University held a week long celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the books publishing, opening a conference, exhibitions and a dedicated centre for environmental studies.  Famous for his layer cake method of understanding and working with natural processes McHarg’s ideas are even more relevant today as they were in 1969.  Design With Nature is undoubtably one of, if not the, most influential landscape architecture books ever written.

Our office held an in house seminar which re-emphasised that current landscape architecture, planning and sustainability models owe a huge amount to the work carried out by McHarg.
