Pearl River Design Guidelines

The Riverfront Design Guideline’s project provides a design guideline for a 100m wide continuous riverfront park along a 20km edge of the Pearl River Back Channel in Guangzhou, South China.

The desired outcome of this project was to create an easy to follow and user-friendly set of design guidelines that would not only shape future river edge development in Guangzhou but also provide an important new public realm and restore the rivers ecology and resilience.

A series of guiding principles sets up the fundamental structure of the riverfront design across a range of landscape conditions together with an integrated planning approach that combines environmental, social, cultural and functional aims and outcomes to shape a new innovative and sustainable design in the future.

The broad mapping of each of these aims will be the starting point for the many participants in this ongoing process of transformation, involving government agencies, community groups, developers and the public.
