Located just ten minutes north of Auckland City, Takapuna is known as the CBD of the North Shore. This vibrant beachside suburb has a lot going for it. Sitting in the Waitematā Harbour, visitors and residents enjoy stunning beachside living, as well as Auckland’s only freshwater lake. Takapuna has it’s own beachy North Shore culture with plenty of dining and entertainment, particularly through the summer months, when we see this beautiful destination really come alive.
Being located in such a stunning spot, it can be hard to resist a quick dip in the sea at lunchtime, and a walk along the foreshore after work is the perfect way to decompress after a big day. We might be biased, but we believe this spot is Auckland’s loveliest beachside town centre.
However, during work hours, we are all business. Recently, we have been busily working on the latest stage of the Hurtsmere Road Streetscape Upgrade project – which is fast approaching completion. Being right on our doorstep, we are particularly thrilled to be involved in this project.
In 2017 Auckland Council appointed Reset Urban Design to lead the multi-disciplinary design consultant team from the initial investigation and concept design phases through to consenting and construction of this $12m upgrade. We are well on track to transform Hurstmere Road into a more open, modern and lively beachside destination in the heart of Takapuna. While maintaining and enhancing the existing character of the town, this project will transform Hurstmere Road and its surrounds into a safer, more spacious and attractive streetscape. The project will ensure this growing and changing area continues to thrive for years to come – with more public seating, better street lighting, and an overall more vibrant streetscape.
Sustainability and ecological sensitivity are at the heart of every design we work on, and Hurstmere Road is no exception. We have ensured rainfall is collected, controlled and filtered, and the new stormwater infrastructure will remove pollutants from the water discharging to the beach. The new road layout and wider footpaths are already making Hurstmere Road a more people-friendly place to enjoy. With new furniture creating prime spots to linger and soak up the vibrant summery atmosphere, and a new open, lively beachside retail destination; Takapuna is really pulling out all the stops this summer.
In the second stage of the Hurstmere Road upgrade, we have enjoyed seeing the creation of a seamless connection from Hurstmere Green through to the Anzac St carpark. The construction team have been working hard paving the footpath and carriageway, installing new rain gardens, stone bollards, street lighting, and furniture. During the construction phase, we are providing site observation & technical design advice.
This long-awaited work to transform Hurstmere Road into a more open, vibrant and accessible retail destination is coming together. Hurstmere Road is the first step in the vision for a new Takapuna. A concept that makes the most of its sea-and-lake location, and also as a safe, accessible and vibrant town centre.
It is an exciting time for the regeneration and revitalisation of central Takapuna.
