Aitutaki Waste Minimisation
In early November, Reset Director Garth Falconer visited Aitutaki in the Cook Islands to present a waste minimisation strategy which we have developed in association with Wānaka Wastebusters a leading community driven waste management business. After meeting with the team at the waste facility, a presentation was given to the Aitutaki Island Council which covered the issues with the current landfill based waste disposal setup and backgrounded the formation and best practise work of Wānaka Wastebusters together with a short series of recommendations. The presentation was gratefully received and hugely appreciated. A number of the suggestions will be implemented immediately, others explored and developed.
This initiative flows on from the Spatial Plan Reset worked on with Romani Katoa in 2020. We have not only sown a seed but have started a relationship between the island and Wānaka communities – hoping that there can be further exchanges to help the islands journey to becoming more sustainable and resilient.
