Northcroft Street, Takapuna
The Reset design studio has recently been involved in completion of the Northcroft streetscape project for Eke Panuku. The project has increased the Takapuna urban ngahere (forest) and provided a safer pedestrian environment through the installation of new street planting and a new pedestrian crossing. A simplified design consisting of a series of 4 to 5m high native coastal trees, featuring a striking timber frame and set within strong bluestone kerbing belies the technical installation challenges including drainage and underground services.
The new 1000L street trees (pohutukawa and puriri) and the lush native understory plants provide important greening in the urban environment and connects the street to the public spaces along Hurstmere Rd, Lake Rd and Waiwharariki Anzac Square – providing a sense of continuity across the urban realm in Takapuna.
Takapuna currently has a “low cover” (10% – 15%) of urban Ngahere, with zero existing trees along Northcroft Street. The new planting will provide significant benefits including contributing to increasing road corridor canopy coverage and Auckland Transports Hikina Te Wero goals of greening the road network, improving biodiversity and creating ecological stepping stones. The planting will also enhance the overall user experience of the street.
