Nell Fisher Reserve is a finely crafted design for a small civic park in Highbury, Birkenhead on Auckland’s North Shore. Situated on a prominent corner, the park forms part of a wider redevelopment which includes the new Birkenhead Library, Plunket facility and Citizens Advice Bureau. A range of finely textured paving treatments and a strong axial path flanked by raised seasonal planters provides a framework which addresses the existing War Memorial, whilst creating a strong connection from the town centre to the new Library.
The design purposefully incorporates a number of significant existing trees and a myriad of existing memorials within an expansive lawn. Distinct from the large open lawn and plaza is the intimate sunken reading courtyard addressing Hinemoa Street and the infant’s play area, adjacent to the Plunket entrance. The park is populated by a number of bespoke seating elements, providing ample opportunities for visitors to sit and enjoy the park. A strong fringe of native planting helps to ground the building, offering filtered views out the cityscape to the south-west. A series of up-lights provide for a dynamic night-time experience, illuminating the War Memorial and specimen trees.
